Make Your Own Free Website
Have you ever wanted to make your own website? You can quickly and easily create and publish your own free website in your browser with Wix. You don’t need to download anything. Kids under 13, get an adult’s help to register with an email address and to teach you a few safety tips. To protect your privacy, do not use your last name, address, or phone number on your website.
This is an example of a very basic website.
Steps to make a basic website after you register and log on:
Tip: If you make a mistake or don’t like a change you have made on your website, click Undo. You can find it in the Edit menu and as a bent arrow icon at the top of the page.
1) Select Create.
2) Choose Blank Website.
3) Under Page Parts, select a background. Choose a background that isn’t too busy and will make it easy for people to see your words. Keep in mind what your website is about.
4) Under Text, write a title for your website. Make sure it is easy to read. Change the color and size of the text by clicking on the text and selecting edit text. Try different effects like shadow and glow. Make sure the text is highlighted to change it.
5) Insert clip art and animations by clicking Clip Art. Don’t make your website too busy! Change the location of your pictures by holding the left mouse button and dragging. Change the size by holding the left mouse button and dragging the corner boxes around your picture.
6) Write the information you want to share by selecting Paragraphs under Text. Dark text on a light background is easiest for people to read. You can change the font, size, and color of the text just like you did in the title text.
7) When you are finished, click the green Publish button, name your website, select Wix.com site, best fit, Publish.
If you follow these steps you will have a very simple website.
To edit your website later, log on, select My Account, choose your website, and click edit.
This is an example of a more advanced website:
After you have mastered the basics try some of these advanced techniques:
Background
Tip: Remember to select a background that is somewhat plain. If your background has too much going on, it will be difficult for people to read your text and see your pictures. Dark text on a light background is easiest for people to read.
After you have selected your background, left click anywhere on it. You can change its characteristics just like any other picture on your website. Select Effects and Adjust Color. Choose the color you think would look best on your website by sliding the hue bar.

Besides the backgrounds included with Wix, you can upload and use any image you have as your website’s background. Place the image, right click on it, and select Set Item as Background. This allows you to design your own background or find one on the internet. See Images below for more information on finding and uploading images.
There are many other things you can experiment with on your background. Try them on your own to see how they work. You will learn a lot by experimenting.
Images
Tip: Do not use too many animations or images on a web page. It will look cluttered.
In addition to the clip art and animations provided by Wix, you can upload and use your own clip art, photos, backgrounds, and animations. You can draw your own pictures using Paint or other programs, scan artwork you have created with a scanner, or take pictures with a camera. You can also find and save images and animations from the internet, but make sure you have permission to use them.
There are many websites that have free clip art that you can save to your computer and then upload to use on your website. Here are two to get you started:
Right click on the image you want to use and select Save Image As… Save the image in your Pictures folder so that you will be able to find it later.
When you are ready to put an image you saved on your website, select Media then click Pics. Choose the Upload button. Under Look at the top, select Pictures or wherever you saved your image. Select the picture you want to use and click open. Now the image is stored under Pics. Click the image and it will place it in your website.

Links
You will probably want to add some links on your website to related websites, videos, games, etc. You will also need to use a link if your website has more than one page. Links can easily be added to both images (pictures) and text (words).
Add a link to your text or image by left clicking and selecting Behaviours. Select Go to Page if you want the text or image to link to another page on your website, and choose the page you want it to link to. Choose Go to URL if you want the text or picture to link to another website. Type in the URL of the website and Apply. Make sure the URL starts with http://

Using all of these techniques you can make a highly-customizable, professional looking website. Wix has a lot of other features that this article does not cover. To learn more about using these features, use the editor’s tutorials by clicking on Help. You can also search the support files and help forum on the Wix website.
